The Best Audi Car to Buy Used

Buying a used car is a smart way to get the make and model you want without incurring the immediate depreciation that comes with buying new. Audi is a beloved brand with an expansive offering of award-winning models, but there are a few specific years to avoid. If you’re looking for a used Q-Series, an iconic A4, or a more modern electric model, you’re going to want to do your homework.

Are Audis Good Cars?

Audi is a highly regarded manufacturer with a well-earned luxury pedigree, and its vehicles are typically a solid option in the used car market. New or used, Audi cars and SUVs are known for a few characteristics:

Driving quality: Sporty handling, excellent all-wheel drive performance for Michigan winters, and plenty of powerful engines to choose from.

Luxury: Audi makes some of the most comfortable cabins in the automotive industry. They’re known for quality materials and exceptional aesthetics.

Safety: Audi consistently earns high safety ratings across its entire model range.

There are some downsides to buying a new or used Audi worth considering. Audi’s reliability record is more spotty than some other manufacturers, but on par with the likes of BMW and Mercedes-Benz. Audi repairs tend to be more expensive than those of many different brands, largely due to the higher cost of parts and specialized labor. That’s why it’s worth working with a dedicated Audi mechanic, and why Traverse City trusts Garfield Auto - we know our stuff!

Common Issues with Audis

Audis are good used cars, but no brand has a perfect track record. In addition to age and individual maintenance and repair records, some models have specific issues that may require attention.

  • Engine Issues: Audi’s 2.0L TFSI engine has a questionable track record, and since it’s found in some of the brand’s best-selling models (A4, A5, A6, Q5), plenty of drivers have experience with its foibles. From excessive oil consumption to timing chain/tensioner failure, the engine requires very consistent and expert maintenance to run smoothly.

  • Electrical Issues: Many models report digital display problems, malfunctioning sensors and lights, as well as other electrical glitches.

  • Suspension Issues: Many models have a history of premature wear on suspension components. We’ve replaced many control arm bushings in relatively new Audis after drivers reported creaking, clunking, and other suspension-related noises.

Audi Years to Avoid

Even great Audi models had their down years, with recurring issues isolated during specific time periods. If you’re looking at used Audis, steer clear of these years - for these models, at least.

Audi A4 (2008-2011): Excessive oil consumption and timing chain tensioner issues made this otherwise great car a bit of a rough pick.

Audi A6 (2000, 2003-2006, 2011): The engine on this was just bad. This model has historically had poor digital displays and faulty wiring.

48V Hybrids (2018-2023): Several of Audi’s hybrid models have had faulty 48V electrical systems. The issue was so severe that it led to a class-action lawsuit.

What Is the Best Used Audi to Buy?

The best used vehicle to buy has a clean and consistent maintenance record, is under 200,000 miles, and has undergone a pre-purchase inspection; this applies to used Audis or any car. That said, some Audi models are safer investments than others, including:

  • 2018-2019 Audi A4

  • 2013-2015 Audi Q5

  • 2016 Audi A3
