OEM Auto Parts: Not Aftermarket, Not a Trade-Off

The terms OEM and aftermarket parts are often used interchangeably, but they aren’t exactly the same thing. While both are low-cost options for used vehicle repairs at your local auto garage, there are some differences in design, quality, and the manufacturer in many cases. Learn just a bit more about OEM auto parts ahead of your next service appointment or repair.

What Does OEM Stand for In Auto Parts?

OEM stands for “original equipment manufacturer”. OEM parts are made specifically for your vehicle by the original manufacturer, whether it’s Ford, BMW, Subaru, etc., to work with their proprietary models. It’s important to note that this definition of OEM for automotive brands differs from that in other industries, where products may be made by third-party contractors or sold under a different name.

OEM vs. Aftermarket Parts

Aftermarket parts are designed and produced by third-party companies. In most cases, aftermarket auto parts are less expensive than OEM products, but their quality and fit aren’t always at the same standard.

Depending on the manufacturer, vehicle make and model, and specific part, aftermarket alternatives can be a better choice, offering significant savings without sacrificing performance or longevity.

Here’s a comparison chart for OEM and aftermarket parts.

When Are OEM Parts Worth It?

We offer customers the option to use genuine OEM parts for their repairs, which can sometimes delay turnaround time and increase total repair costs—but it is worth it in some cases.

When You Should Request OEM Parts

There are a few scenarios when OEM is the way to go:

  • Body repair: After an accident, request OEM parts. That’s because aftermarket paneling rarely fits as well as the real deal.

  • Leases: Using aftermarket parts may decrease your vehicle’s value, potentially eating into your security deposit. It’s one of the reasons leasing isn’t a great option for most drivers.

  • Insurance: If your state doesn’t require repair estimates to show whether they include aftermarket or OEM parts, go OEM. Of course, most insurance companies love aftermarket parts, and they may charge you a fee if you request OEM parts instead. It’s a good idea to check your insurance policy to see what is covered.
