The Best-Selling Cars Ever

Several cars and trucks are staples on American roads. Since the end of World War 2, Americans have purchased millions of vehicles from a mix of extinct brands and legendary manufacturers, still shaping the American economy. The nation’s appetite for vehicles may have exploded in the 1950s, but the momentum shifted between the wars. The number of vehicles on the road doubled between 1921 and 1929, and we’ve never looked back.

The Top-Selling Car of All-time

The five best-selling cars ever highlight a mix of proven sedans and pickups, but many of these models share a penchant for reinvention. Many of these manufacturers have regularly updated models and leveraged the name to deliver variations that appeal to changing consumer interests over the course of several decades.

  1. Toyota Corolla

Toyota has refreshed the Corolla 12 times since the model debuted in 1966. It took just 8 years for the Corolla to be the top-selling car ever. Known for reliability, owners expect to put tens of thousands of miles on their cars without issue. It’s the top-ranked compact car in the world and has sold over 50 million vehicles

    2. Ford F-Series

The best-selling vehicle in the US is a truck. The Ford F-150 debuted in the post-war boom of 1948. It’s been the top-seller in the US for 41 straight years and the best-selling truck for 46 years. Ford buyers like the truck’s relatively strong fuel efficiency and longevity. Ford claims more F Series trucks with 250,000 miles or more on the road than any other model or manufacturer. The F Series has sold over 43 million units during its storied history.

    3. Volkswagen Golf

Volkswagen’s Golf led European auto sales from 2008 to 2022 when it was finally dethroned by the Peugeot 208. Still, the Gold remains a driver favorite thanks to its affordable price tag, playful driving characteristics, and reliability. And it’s not VW’s only entrant in the top five selling cars, either.

    4. Volkswagen Passat

Designed larger and slightly more luxurious than the Golf, the VW Passat earned the honor of being the Most Successful Midsize Car in the World. More than 30 million Passats have been sold in every automotive market in the world. It’s known as a safe, reliable car with plenty of technology built into every function.

    5. Honda Civic
