Will Drive For Pizza: Three Day-Trips In Northern Michigan

July 9, 2019, 12:00 am

It’s the height of summer and around the country families are loading up for their own version of the great American road trip. Across the country, across the state, or even just across town, hitting the open road with friends and family is a tradition that helps us connect to new places and experiences, as well as with each other.

Here in Traverse City, we’re in a prime spot for a day trip. Why? Because who would want to leave Northern Michigan in peak summer? We certainly don’t like missing the most pleasant season of the year, and that’s why our favorite trips stay local. To help fuel your summer adventure, we picked our three favorite under the radar spots for pizza, fun, and a way to see Michigan in its prime without having to go too far.

Empire Village Inn. Empire is might be a sleepy lakeshore town, but it certainly isn’t one that gets tucked in too early. Empire’s sunsets are some of the most beautiful in the world and every evening, crowds swarm from all over to watch the sun go down in brilliant fashion over Lake Michigan. Make a day of it by spending the afternoon on the beach and making the short walk into town for some of the best pizza you’ll ever have at the Empire Village Inn. It’s a family owned, pub-style restaurant loved by visitors and locals alike, offering a pleasant, cheerful respite from the sun and a laid-back atmosphere that makes you feel at home.

Empire is just a forty-minute drive from downtown Traverse City, making it a trip you can make any weekend or even sneak out for on a weeknight!

Roman Wheel Pizza and Subs. If you love pizza, you’ve probably already heard of Roman Wheel. As you drive into Suttons Bay, the sign is one of the first on the main street and few visitors miss stopping in. Suttons Bay sits just a block off the bay that lent the village its name, with a huge, sandy beach and a charming marina all within view from the shops and restaurants. There are a lot of great options in town, but don’t overlook Roman Wheel. They’ve got a big menu that includes subs and sandwiches for picky eaters, plus one of the more comfortable and friendly atmospheres around.

Suttons Bay sits on West Grand Traverse Bay, with world-famous M-22 running through. Many motorists make Suttons Bay their first stop in the 140 tour of M-22 that runs to Northport before turning west along Lake Michigan, all the way south to Empire!

Cicero’s. Every summer, thousands of people swarm the small community of Interlochen to enjoy their concert series. The village “Between Two Lakes” is home to the Interlochen Arts Academy, a school that’s home to some of the most talented music students in the world and plenty of famous alumni visiting and teaching. There are shows all summer long, and when regulars and locals need something delicious, they head to Cicero’s

It’s as charmingly unpretentious as possible; it’s just great pizza and friendly people bringing it to you. In addition to concert-goers, you’ll also see families from the Interlochen State Park making the short walk down for dinner, plus students and faculty from the Arts Academy as well.

What’s your favorite car trip to take? Make the most of summer to experience everything Northern Michigan has to offer!  No matter where the road takes you, make sure you get there safe with complete car from Garfield Auto Service Center.
