The Most Popular Car In Each State For 2020

December 23, 2020, 12:00 am

Quick, before you read any further, take a guess; what is the most popular car in Michigan? The answer may or may not surprise you, but just how regionalized car popularity is might!

Leave it to the red-blooded American to opt for reliability and longevity when it comes to their favorite vehicle, even if it’s a domestic brand. That Honda is the most popular car in the US shouldn’t come as too much of a surprise. We’ve written about Honda’s two best-selling cars, the Accord and the Civic, and both remain a perennial favorite with car buyers.

In 2020, the Accord and the Civic are favorite vehicles in seventeen out of fifty states, including the population-dense Beltway of New York, New Jersey, Virginia, as well as California. Honda is the most popular brand for the third year in a row, though it may have a new rival in the Nissan Altima. Nissan has swept across the South like a foreign-made tornado, including Florida and Texas. Nissan topped the charts in fourteen states.

But in Michigan and in most of the Midwest, domestic brands still reign supreme. In Michigan, the Chevy Malibu is the top car, a model that is the favorite of eight states in total, with its Impala sister car the favorite in four. Chevrolet is miles ahead of Ford as a state favorite, with Ford’s Focus winning just two states, West Virginia and Kansas.

Surprisingly, sedans continue to be top-sellers in the US, although many brands are slowly transitioning to offering a wider selection of slightly larger crossover options like the Subaru Forester, Toyota Highlander, and Honda CR-V. Only two states, Wyoming and Alaska, opted for an SUV or crossover as their top options in 2020.

So, what are the top cars overall? By volume, the Nissan Altima takes the cake this year, followed by the Honda Accord. They also slot the Civic, while in fourth place, just behind the Chevy Malibu. Chevy joins Honda with two cars in the top five with the beloved Malibu.
