Spring Tune-Up Time!

April 27, 2020, 12:00 am

While you may not have been racking up the miles the past two months, spring is still a good time to take a closer look at your vehicle. Here are a few reasons why.

Even with the state lockdown order extended to May 16 and little travel since mid-March, you may have more miles, wear and tear, and things to check on your car than you think. From holiday road trips, road salt, potholes, and the extra strain of cold weather, May is prime time to check-in before summer.

Your Tires. Warmer weather means changing tire pressure. Really. Checking your tire pressure for proper inflation can improve your gas mileage, handling, and the life of your tires. If you’re still driving your snow tires, get those changed out as soon as possible. The softer compound of winter tires can cause them to wear much faster than summer or all-seasons.

Your Fluids. Before you know it, we’ll see some real heat. That can be brutal on your engine if your coolant levels are low. While you’re under the hood, check your oil and transmission fluid levels as well. Top off what you can, and check all caps and gaskets to ensure they’re tight.

Is It Hot In Here? When you finally turn the dial from heat to cool, you’re going to want to make sure your air conditioning system is there for you. Take a second to locate and inspect your compressor belt, making sure they’re not cracked or brittle.

Scrub It. Now that we’re safe from more snow and road salt, it’s time for a thorough wash. While it’s easy to focus on the body, get down into the rims, wheel wells, and undercarriage to get rid of any lingering salt that could eat away at your vehicle all summer. Don’t forget to clean inside, too. Wipe things down, vacuum, and consider using a disinfectant if you’ve had other people in your car at all recently. Even as summer arrives, it’s a good idea to keep a clean mask and perhaps a small stash of disinfectant wipes handy.

Does it sound like a lot? Leave it to us!
