Ready For Spring: A Seasonal Automotive Guide

February 11, 2020, 12:00 am

Spring is almost here! Whether you’re looking to hit the open road for a spring break road trip or just get your vehicle in shape for the new season, we’ve put together a few really easy things to check for as we move from ice and cold to sun and warmth!

While northern Michigan never sees a smooth transition from winter to spring, we can count on the snow to melt at some point! As the weather improves, it’s a great time to run through your vehicle and focus on some specifics that are often hardest-hit by the cold and snow. By taking a little extra time between your scheduled maintenance to give your car a once over, you can do a lot to save money and be safer on the roads, too.

Check Wipers. No doubt you’ve put your wipers through the wringer over the past several months. Look closer at your windshield wipers to see if the rubber section is dry or cracked. This can reduce their efficiency in the rainy months ahead! Additionally, look at the base of the wipers to make sure no part is rusted or cracked; if so, they may break off right when you need them most.

Check Oil and Filters. Freezing temperatures can be brutal on your engine, and that can also cause it to run a bit dirty. Check your oil levels and color and schedule a change if you’re due. It’s also a good time to look at your various filters. If they look dirty or worn, replace them yourself or let your trusted technician take care of it.

Check Your Tires. If you’ve used snow tires the past few months, they’ve probably put on some miles. Before you swap them out, check the tread depth so you know if you’ve got another season with them, or if it’s time to budget for a new set of tires next winter. If you use all-seasons, check your tread and make sure your tires are properly inflated. A swing of 10 degrees can cause a change of 10 pounds per square inch or more! Underinflated tires wear faster and have a negative impact on your fuel efficiency, too.

Schedule Your Next Service Appointment. Whether it’s a spring break trip or a summer adventure, get your service on the calendar so you’re prepared. We’re all busy, and automotive care might not always float to the top of your to-do list. Get ahead of the procrastination by schedule sooner, rather than too late!
