Low-Mileage Maintenance For Locked-Down Drivers

May 11, 2020, 12:00 am

After months of staying home, there have been some positives for car owners. But fewer miles doesn’t necessarily all of your car maintenance gets to stay idle.

Americans are driving less than they have in decades due to the coronavirus pandemic. That’s led to a few bright spots, including not having to top up your fuel tank very often. But even though you may not be piling on the miles or taking any road trips this spring, there are a few things to check on to make sure your car is running great.

We don’t know when things will get back to normal, nor do we really know what ‘normal’ will look like in the weeks and months ahead. That means it might be a good time to get in the habit of taking on these few maintenance tips for low-mileage drivers.

First, even if you’re doing your best to stay home, it’s still good to drive your vehicle at least twice miles per week. This allows your battery to stay charged and also helps to ensure that you clear rust off your brakes pads and prevent the calipers from seizing.

And while gas prices are really low, resist the urge to fill up unless you know you’ll need it. Gas that sits in your tank for over three months could begin to break down. We’ve seen customers that have had the same fuel in the tank since the beginning of March, so look at how much you’ve burned since the beginning of the lockdown and purchase fuel accordingly.

It’s also a good time to keep in the habit of your normal checks, too. While your car engine is cold, pop the hood and check your oil, air filters, and transmission fluids.

It might also be a great time to check to see if your car is eligible for any safety recalls and schedule your repairs and replacements now that you aren’t doing too much driving. Most manufacturers have recall information available on their website, but you can also call your local dealer so see if your model has any updates.
